Time of Reflection
“We must begin by admitting that people and situations do not cause us to speak as we do. Our hearts control our words. People and situations simply provide the occasion for the heart to express itself.”
~Paul David Tripp, contemporary pastor and author
“It would be a good contest amongst Christians, one to labor to give no offense and the other to labour to take none.”
~Richard Sibbes (1577-1635), Church of England pastor and theologian
“Deep in our timid hearts is a desire to be loved mildly, nothing more. That way, we retain control, we set the terms, we avoid risk. Our loving God, in His ferocious intensity, will have none of it. He defines the meaning of our lives, and we are saved from our anemic loves and brought by degrees into intense loves, like His own.”
~Ray Ortlund, contemporary pastor and author
“Once you have sorted the issues out, you can begin to decide what steps to take to resolve the problem. It is often helpful to look at each issue and ask, ‘Is this really worth fighting over?’ When significant personal or material issues are involved, the answer to this question will be yes… In many cases, however, if you look at a particular issue from a biblical perspective, you will realize that it is simply not worth fighting over. Such matters should be dropped or settled as quickly and quietly as possible.”
~Ken Sande, The Peacemaker
“To be a friend to someone does not mean you pamper or indulge him or her. Friendship also involves struggle and loss, tension and turbulence… A friend, if honest and true, will tell you things you don’t want to hear. A friend, if deeply serious about you, will do things that feel painful. Friends do that because they respect our dignity and honor our uniqueness.”
~Eugene Peterson (1932-2018), American minister and author
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
~1 Peter 5:8-9

Call to Worship
Psalm 32 (ESV)
LEADER: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
PEOPLE: Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
LEADER: For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
PEOPLE: For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah
LEADER: I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not cover my iniquity;
ALL: I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Songs and Liturgy
(sing as a group and/or sing along to recorded versions)
NAILED TO THE CROSS
(Bryan Fowler, Christoper Llewellyn, Gareth Gilkeson, Jonathan Lindley Smith)
When I stand accused by my regrets
And the Devil roars his empty threats,
I will preach the gospel to myself
That I am not someone condemned,
For Jesus Christ is my defense.
CHORUS:
My sin is nailed to the cross.
My soul is healed by the scars.
The shame and guilt I bear no more.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord.
When my doubt and shame hang over me
Like the arrows of the enemy,
I will run again to Calvary;
That rugged hill of Hell’s defeat,
My fortress and my victory.
(CHORUS)
BRIDGE:
It is finished, sin is vanquished.
Hallelujah, praise the Lord.
All the glory, all the honor,
To my Savior, Christ the Lord.
(REPEAT)
When I stand before the throne at last,
His blood will plead my innocence.
I will worship Him with holy hands
And raise the song that never ends,
Of Jesus Christ, my righteousness.
(CHORUS)

RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 27 (ESV)
LEADER: The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
PEOPLE: When evildoers assail me
to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.
LEADER: Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet I will be confident.
PEOPLE: One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.
LEADER: For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will lift me high upon a rock.
ALL: And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.
I HAVE A SHELTER
(Steve Cook, Vikki Cook, Bob Kauflin)
I have a shelter in the storm,
When troubles pour upon me.
Though fears are rising like a flood,
My soul can rest securely.
O Jesus, I will hide in You,
My place of peace and solace.
No trial is deeper than Your love
That comforts all my sorrows.
I have a shelter in the storm,
When all my sins accuse me.
Though justice charges me with guilt,
Your grace will not refuse me.
O Jesus, I will hide in You,
Who bore my condemnation.
I find my refuge in Your wounds,
For there I find salvation.
I have a shelter in the storm,
When constant winds would break me.
For in my weakness, I have learned
Your strength will not forsake me.
O Jesus, I will hide in You,
The One who bears my burdens.
With faithful hands that cannot fail,
You’ll bring me home to heaven.

Sharing
(as a lead into the Prayer Time, as a group share how you are feeling and what you are learning; below are suggested questions)
- What are you learning about life/God lately?
- What do you want to pray for this week?
- What fears are you experiencing with this pandemic?
Prayer Time
(have an open time of prayer, appoint one or two to pray, or you may pray the following prayer)
“O God Almighty, Lord of heaven and earth, and of all creation visible and invisible, in your ineffable goodness, look down upon your people gathered in your name. Be our helper and defender in this day of affliction. You know our weakness. You hear our cry in repentance and contrition of heart. O Lord who loves mankind deliver us from the impending threat of the coronavirus. Send your angels to watch over us and protect us. Grant health and recovery to those suffering from this virus. Guide the hands of physicians, and preserve those who are healthy that we may continue to serve you in peace and glorify the most honorable and majestic name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and for evermore. Amen.” (adapted from the Orthodox liturgy)

James 4:1-12 (ESV)
1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers.The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
Confession of Faith
The Apostles’ Creed (circa 5th Century)
LEADER: Christian, what do you believe?
CONGREGATION: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
He descended into hell*.
The third day He arose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit;
the holy catholic** church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.

LET US LOVE AND SING AND WONDER
(John Newton 1774, Laura Taylor)
Let us love and sing and wonder,
Let us praise the Savior’s name!
He has hushed the law’s loud thunder,
He has quenched Mt. Sinai’s flame.
Let us love the Lord who bought us,
Pitied us when enemies,
Called us by His grace and taught us,
Gave us ears and gave us eyes.
He has washed us with His blood,
He has washed us with His blood,
He has washed us with His blood,
He presents our souls to God.
Let us wonder grace and justice
Join and point to mercy’s store;
When through grace in Christ our trust is,
Justice smiles and asks no more.
He who washed us with His blood,
He who washed us with His blood,
He who washed us with His blood,
Has secured our way to God.
Let us praise and join the chorus
Of the saints enthroned on high;
Here they trusted him before us,
Now their praises fill the sky.
He has washed us with His blood,
He has washed us with His blood,
He has washed us with His blood,
He presents us whole to God.

Benediction
(The leader or individual should read this aloud relishing in the confident assertion that Christ has conquered. )
from 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV)
LEADER: Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.
PEOPLE: Amen!
Worshipping God through Giving
God has called us to be generous. He has entrusted this earth and all that is in it to us, but it is, ultimately, His! The Father gave what was most precious to Him, His own Son, in order to die for our sins. He has given to us abundantly beyond all that we could possibly ask or imagine! He is a benevolent and generous Giver! So, we give.
First, we want to remind you to continue your regular giving to TQC. This supports the ongoing work and ministry here in the Upper Valley and around the world through our missions support. Second, please consider giving to our Benevolence Fund, which supports local community care, both inside and outside the church. This is vitally important right now! As we see needs sprouting up around the community, we want to be positioned to extend a loving hand of support to those in need.
